The Program – Shunda Creek Recovery Center
Enviros Shunda Creek Recovery Center is a 12-week live-in, Adventure Therapy Addiction recovery program. Shunda Creek Recovery Center serves 18-24-year-old males who have substance abuse issues and who often struggle with diagnosed/undiagnosed mental health concerns. Shunda Creek has been providing treatment since 2009 and operates 85 km west of Rocky Mountain House in the Nordegg Alberta area. The site is 3 hours SW of Edmonton, 3 hours NW of Calgary and 2 hours west of Red Deer. Shunda Creek is open to all males 18-24 years of age within Alberta.
Shunda Creek is an adventure therapy recovery program that utilizes intensive wilderness and adventure-based programming coupled with a live-in treatment approach to help clients understand and moderate their addiction. Shunda Creeks Recovery’s philosophical approach is based on the concept that professionals and clinical staff are not “the experts.” The staff leaders do not know what a client should do and cannot tell them how they should change. Instead, staff invite the new participant into a process of shared journey and discovery. Staff walk alongside clients as they learn about themselves, their addiction, and about whom they want to become. Staff are deliberate and intentional in recognizing power differentials and work to take responsibility for this differential in compassionate, intentional, and attentive ways. Clients, clinicians, and staff “journey” together to meet client needs. Shunda Creek Recovery’s approach to adventure therapy capitalizes on its remote location to use client-driven and mindfulness-based adventure experiences (MBEs). Shunda integrates MBEs throughout treatment to help clients be present, open, and aware of their substance use treatment/recovery process. MBEs facilitated in adventure environments might include reflective practices like meditation, yoga, sweats, solos, and silent hiking in nature. Most often they involve multi-day back-country challenges. These trips that are referred to as “mindfulness in action” are client-initiated staff-supported and designed with planned goals, themes, and foci.
The Position – Program Supervisor
As the Shunda Creek Recovery Program Supervisor your primary responsibility is the delivery of an adventure therapy addiction recovery program which includes an Alumni aftercare component in accordance with agency directives, policies, and priorities within the Service Operating Requirements as agreed upon within our contract with Alberta Health Services. In partnership with the Manager, and Therapists you must ensure the daily program activities are in compliance with accreditation, Provincial licensing, and wilderness industry standards so as to ensure an integrated, effective and therapeutic service. As the Supervisor you are responsible for ensuring staff deliver the program using an experiential approach, adventure therapy, principle-based, and trauma-informed philosophy to ensure programming is intentional and safe within the prescribed program budget. This position is responsible for ensuring the day-to-day delivery of therapeutic groups, implementation of My Recovery Plan, and therapeutic activities, ensuring wilderness trips are staffed accordingly, and ensuring that staff are completing the mandatory training as indicated through our accreditation body. This position is responsible for ensuring that supply orders of food, medication, first aid kits, and wilderness gear meet industry standards and that the audit of gear is accurate and well-supplied for Clients. This position includes mentoring of staff, performance management, performance evaluation and the full recruitment cycle of Addiction workers and Shift Supervisors as well as regular supervision of the shift supervisors and their performance evaluations. You are responsible for the ongoing collaborative relationship with our Red Deer AHS partners, arranging quarterly meetings and providing information regarding successes emerging trends and challenges. The position includes ensuring that the facility is well maintained, in good repair and meets the various codes that govern the provision of a program of this nature.
This position is also part of a larger agency leadership team and is expected to attend leadership meetings monthly and when appropriate on various committees that may arise.
The position is a 40-hour-a-week position. It involves overnight stays unless the candidate relocates to Rocky Mountain House or Nordegg. Within the first 12 to 18 months attendance on site will be heavier at times as the program adjusts to a new location and onboarding and mentoring of newly recruited staff as the bed capacity grow from 10 to 18 beds.
Schedule: Monday – Thursday.
Qualifications
- Degree or diploma in Social Work or Human Services.
- One to three years of previous experience in a supervisory role in a Human Services setting
- Two to three years of exposure and experience with Experiential Learning
- Three to five years of background in Therapeutic Addiction Recovery
- Two to three years of exposure Adventure Therapy
- Dispute resolution skills
- Registration in professional associations or colleges as indicated by education.
- A current criminal record check including vulnerable sector (completed within the last 6 months)
- A current Alberta Intervention Record check (completed within the last 12 months)
- A current First Aid and CPR/AED ‘C’ certificate
- A Class 4 or 5 Driver’s License (Class 5 GDL will not be accepted)
- A 5-year driver abstract with no major violations (such as a DUI or Distracted Driving charge)
For Consideration, Applicants Will Need to Demonstrate the Following
In carrying out your responsibilities as program Supervisor, you are expected to represent an agency perspective in all your communications and actions.
- Ensure Clients have a voice and choice in their treatment.
- Support staff in developing positive and professional relationships with Clients.
- Consult with Therapists and Managers (as appropriate) regarding the overall therapeutic delivery of the program.
- Ensure treatment teams are consistent in the therapeutic direction set for individual Clients.
- Provide support to the staff team as it relates to Clients assisting staff in acquiring further knowledge regarding mental health and how it impacts Clients in treatment.
- Provide support to Alumni who call into Shunda Creek.
- Ensure connection to the clients’ families through phone or video calls, schedule time with a family therapist and support the quarterly family treatment weekends at Shunda Creek.
- Consult with Alberta Health Services regarding the screening of incoming Clients as appropriate.
- Ensure that all relevant documentation is completed including research, case planning, CIRs, home visits and daily case notes.
- Complete monthly and quarterly reports as required. (i.e. monthly nominals)
- Ensure all Wilderness staff are trained to industry standards.
- Ensure that all aspects of Adventure therapy meet acceptable therapeutic standards in collaboration with the Wilderness Facilitator.
- Ensure your practice adheres to OH&S standards.
